366 Laughs- January 30, 2016

1/30/16

A really really good day.

Families are forever.

We've been thinking about and looking forward to this day ever since we had Michael.

366 Laughs- January 9th 2016

1/9/16

Michael's sweet Ebay find.  I guess this usually goes for a lot more money... it has slight corner damage.  It has a book, CD, vinyl, and lots of cool extras.

Plus we took a silly picture making it look bigger (as well as his hands, haha.)

All good.

A special Anniversary gift

Over 20 years ago, Tom asked me to marry him.  We met in January of 1995 in the men's locker room, were great friends first, started dating in March, he met my family in April, we talked about marriage sometime in May, I met his parents over Memorial Day, and he finally asked me in August of 1995.  My grandmother provided her engagement ring from her first marriage.  Tom told me that since he got the engagement ring for free, he'd buy me a viola.  Over the years, I kind of forgot.

Fast forward 20 years to Christmas day, because Tom can't wait 4 more days until our 20th anniversary.

I cried.

Yes, I do play.  Yes, I started playing in junior high, continued in high school, stopped in college and through marriage and having many of my children, started again in the fall of 2011 when we moved here and we played in a Thanksgiving multi-denominational performance of "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing" and other numbers.   To do so I borrowed my wonderful sister in law's viola.  I still have it.  It was so great to be playing again.

I was also 6 months pregnant for that performance, haha.

Fast forward to fall of 2013, when we prepared The Many Moods of Christmas cantata by Robert Bennet and Robert Shaw.  Also difficult.  It was also fantastic.  I was also 8 months pregnant with Virginia, haha.  We performed it again in 2014 and just a few weeks ago in 2015.

This poor viola, though.  It's brand new so it needs TLC as I warm it up to playing, tuning, etc.  Withing moments of opening it the D string broke (kind of important, like the A string on a violin...).  We ordered a new set of strings.  The package came on Monday.  The envelope looked like it had never been sealed, haha, so, no strings were left in the package.  They are replacing them and they should arrive today, the 30th.  Here's hoping!

365 Joys- November 30th 2015

11/30/15

This is in honor of a They Might Be Giants photo...

With the same instruments.

Michael is teaching himself to play guitar, and Benjamin has taught himself to play yet another instrument.

Yes, he can play it, at least some songs, already.

I'll post pictures of how they actually look after Halloween.

365 Joys- August 31st 2015

8/31/15

The last day of August!  Wow!  Only 4 months left of the year.  Really and truly.

Crazy.

And today was a crazy day.  Blessed, too.

GEDC0435
We were able to go pick up an organ someone gave to us.  We had help getting it into the house from an unexpected source.

GEDC0438
We received a "Family Home Evening Box" complete with dinner and a lesson about the Sabbath Day.

GEDC0443
And we are blessed with a great family.

365 Joys- August 14th 2015

8/14/15

Benjamin has taken up another instrument... yes, in addition to his being self taught on the harmonica and excelling at piano with lessons from a wonderful teacher now... and a wonderful teacher who helped him start out!

GEDC0314 He bought a ukulele.

And watched a few youtube videos on how to play.

And looked up a few chords.

And he's playing lol.  Someday something is going to be difficult for him... I know it!

GEDC0319
Anyway, Michael is also learning an instrument... the guitar.

Here they are moving their instruments upstairs.  Guess which one is heavier.

365 Joys- July 13th 2015

7/13/15

We started singing the Family Home Evening song from the Primary songbook and Ginny brightened up, and RAN over to where we keep the hymnbooks and proceeded to cry for someone to get them out... she really knows how we do Family Home Evening, haha.  Here she is telling Timothy to get them FASTER.

GEDC0065
We only had half of us here, as Tom, Michael, Benjamin and Emilie are in Nauvoo for Youth Conference and Nathanael is at Scout Camp... so it's just me and the youngest 6 but we still had Family Home Evening!

365 Joys- June 3rd 2015

6/3/15

The Youth in the area were invited to a special Fireside with Lindsey Stirling at our Stake Center.  They got to hear her play, speak, and then got group pictures with her.

Here is before the Fireside.

At the last minute, families were invited also so I decided Samuel could go, too.  :)  He's only 10 but knows who Lindsey Stirling is and loves her music as much as the rest of the family.

Here are pictures with her.

March 22nd 2015- Benjamin's Piano Recital UPDATED WITH VIDEO! :)

Benjamin participated in his first piano recital today.  He did great!

IMG_4616

He didn't play perfectly but he did do a great job of recovering and continuing on with his pieces.  Sometimes he gets frustrated and starts over... not this time!

That was what I was most proud of... even though his pieces were almost perfect!

Tom also got a kick out of Benjamin's playing more complicated pieces RIGHT after someone played Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

All the participants did great, from the tiniest to the biggest (Benjamin).

The other really awesome part was how many people showed up to support Benjamin.  We had 3 full rows of Benjamin fans, mostly from church.  We called it 4th hour... hahaha.  Thank you friends!

Tom apologizes for the sideways-ness of the first video.

Benjamin playing Carol of the Bells on piano

Benjamin allowed me to video him playing the song he just learned.  He's been taking lessons almost all year, and he took beginning piano a few years ago.

I think he sounds great, but that's his mom talking.  This is something he's really motivated to learn, and he is definitely progressing!

Enjoy!  (and comment, he'll see them.)

December 13th 2014- A Daily Valencic

IMG_3231

12/13/14

We performed "The Many Moods of Christmas" cantata with other members of our stake and friends.  105 volunteer musicians.  It was fantastic!

Michael took this picture from the balcony where he watched with Samuel and Emilie.  Last year they attended the dress rehearsal and Benjamin and Nathanael went to the performance, so this year they switched.  Though Benjamin also got to bring Liberty, Timothy and Christopher, which made it a bit crazier.

Still a great day!

Ginny is right on top of the music...

She's just climbing over the viola to get to the trumpet?

Or just using both for her support.

Troublemaker.

Juliana is conducting an imaginary orchestra/chorus.  Or her brothers and sisters.

No difference.

I love her enthusiasm for EVERYTHING.
